Igårkväll såg jag på DVD filmen om Christopher McCandless gjord av Sean Penn efter Jon Krakauers bok. Den boken läste jag någon gång på 90-talet och den grep mig då djupt, filmen är lika bra om inte bättre, vilket ofta inte är fallet med filmatiserade böcker, men här måste jag säga att Sean Penn har lyckats.

Yesterday evening I saw the DVD-movie about Christopher McCandless made by Sean Penn after the book written by Jon Krakauer. I read that book in the 90-ies and was deeply touched by it then. The movie is as good if not better, which is not often the case with filmed books, but here I have to say that Sean Penn succeeded.

Om Chris (misslyckade?) äventyr kan man säga både det ena och det andra och det tredje. Många tankar. Om ideal, om psykologi, om kärlek till naturen, om sökandet efter identitet... På internet finns en hel del material, inte minst på youtube där någon har filmat sina besök vid bussen. Kommentarerna under går i sina vanliga hätska jargonger där anonyma marodörer finner nöje i att sabla ner allt och alla som inte tycker lika.

About Chris (failed?) adventure one can say a lot of things. I have a lot of thought, about ideals, about psychology, about love to nature, about the searching after identity... On internet there is a lot of material, not at least on youtube where someone have filmed his visits to the bus. The comments under goes in the usual malevolentic jargong where anonymous prics finds pleasure in butchering everyone who do not think the same.

På Wikipeda kan man läsa att Chris troligen ändå inte dog av ngn förgiftning. Obduktionen visade inte på någonting sådant och potatisfröna som han samlade var inte giftiga. Men vem vet? kanske var det en kombination av flera orsaker och då han senare var undernärd blir ju kroppen extra känslig.

On Wikipedia one can read that likely young Chris did not die from poisoning anyway, but simple starvation. The autopsy did not show any signs of that and the potatoseeds were not poisonous. But how knows? maybe it was a combination of several reasons and when he later was too thin the body becomes extra sensitive.

Jag beundrar familjen som bestämde sig för att trots allt tillåta att filmen gjordes. Det måste ha varit otroligt jobbigt för dem, inte minst med tanke på hur Chris bara stack utan att skriva ett enda ord till någon enda av dem. Inte ens till sin syster som var den som förstod honom bäst. Själviskt? eller vågade han inte eftersom han trodde att de skulle få honom att ändra sig? var det däför han stack till Alaska "hals över huvud" för att därefter kunna ta kontakt med dem när han liksom bevisat sig själv? Spekulationer, vi kommer aldrig att få veta.

I admire the family who decided after all to allow the movie to be made. It must have been extremely hard for them. He left them without writing one word to anyone of them. Not even to his sister who was the one who understood him the best. Selfish? or did he not dare to as he was afraid they would make him change his mind? Was that why he left to Alaska head over heels, to be able to contact them after he had proved himself? Speculations, we will never know.

Det har även gjorts en dokumentär om hans resa genom Amerika. Ron Lamothe hade läst boken och reste under 2006 i Chris fotspår. Flera intervjuer med många olika människor som träffat Chris eller berörts av hans öde på andra sätt kastar nytt ljus över hans liv.

There is also a documentary made about his travel through Amerika.Ron Lamothe ad read the book and travelled in 2006 in the footsteps of Chris. A lot of interviews with different people who had met Chris or were touched by his destiny in other ways casts a new light on his life.


Sedan finns det andra äventyrare som vet hur man kan resa i vildmarken utan att riskera livet av onödiga anledningar... det finns tillräckligt med risker redan som det är.

Then there are other adventurers who know how to do these sort of wilderness-travels without killing themselves unnecessarily... there are enough of riscs as there are.
