Kyrkor i Mechelen / Churches in Mechelen
Innan biokvällen skulle börja i onsdags gick jag genom Mechelen bort till biblioteket. Mechelen var under medeltiden en stad med makt och rikedom, men när den världsliga makten började avta övergick man istället till att befästa den religiösa makten. 1559 blev Mechelen huvudstad för ett nytt biskopsdöme som då täckte inte bara Belgien utan också nuvarande Nederländerna och Luxemburg. Och det märks för kyrkorna ligger nästan vägg i vägg med varandra inne i stan!

Before the cinema evening was going to start I walked through Mechelen to the library. Mechelen was during the middle ages a town with power and wealth, but when the worldly power started to decrease they switched to consolidate the religious power. In 1559 Mechelen became the capital of a new archdiocese which in that time covered not only Belgium but also todays Netherlands and Luxembourg. And you clearly notice it beacuse the churches are almost situated wall to wall inside the town!

The church of "Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-over-de-Dijle" (to distinguish it from the other church "Onze-lieve-vrouw-van-Hanswijk"). onze-lieve-vrouw is in English "Our Lady" which refers to Maria, Jesus mother. During the middle ages Maria was very much venerated.
Vad skulle man kunna översätta "onze-lieve-vrouw" med till svenska?
Och till sist kom jag fram till biblioteket där de också hade internet. Trevlig och ljus byggnad.
